Privacy at Ask Ollie
Ask Ollie helps parents pick activities to do with their kids. It is run by an independent parent developer in the United States. We keep as little as we can, we never sell it, and you can download or delete it at any time from your Settings page.
Questions, or want something deleted? Use the contact form. It reaches the person who runs Ask Ollie.

Who it's for
Accounts are for parents and guardians 18 and over. Kids use Ask Ollie through a parent's account, with a grown-up, on the grown-up's phone.
What we keep, and why
- Your email and a password, to sign you in. Passwords are stored only as a scrambled hash; nobody can read them.
- If you sign in with Apple or Google, the email address it gives us (with Apple, this can be a private address that forwards to yours) and the id it uses for your account, so the next sign-in finds the same family. We do not ask for your name or anything else from that account. If its email matches an account you already have, and Apple or Google has confirmed the address, it signs in to that account rather than making a second one.
- Each kid's nickname, a preset avatar and, if you choose, a birth month, typed in by you. The birth month fits ideas to their age.
- What your kids tap on kid screens: ratings, picks, chores they mark done and stars they spend. Kids only tap; they never type anything to us.
- Your family name, pantry items, allergies and, if you choose, a ZIP code, for ideas that fit your home and nearby places.
- When you gave consent, as the parent or guardian, to keep the above, and when we emailed you about it.
- Usage counts (for example "an activity was finished"), linked to your family only by a scrambled code, never your name or email.
- Visit counts on grown-up and public pages: which page opened (never anything after its first part), the site that sent you there, and whether you opened the app from your home screen. To count visitors without a cookie, we make a scrambled code from the day, your internet address and your browser's name. It changes every day, so it cannot follow you from one day to the next, and the address and browser name are not kept. Kid screens send nothing.
- Messages you send us through the feedback box or the contact form, and invites you create for a co-parent or caregiver.
- Your email, if you join the updates list on the home page, to tell you when there is news.
What we never collect from kids
Real names, photos, voice recordings, typed text, location, contact details, or device and advertising identifiers.
Who else sees it
Only your family. Each family's data is walled off in the database itself, not just in the app. These service providers handle data only to run Ask Ollie for us:
- Supabase (database and sign-in) stores everything above.
- Apple and Google (sign-in, only if you choose Continue with Apple or Continue with Google) confirm it is you. They see that you signed in to Ask Ollie, as with any app you sign in to with them.
- Vercel (hosting) runs the app, so every request passes through it.
- Resend (email) sends the emails you ask for, such as a password reset, and the two emails about your consent when you set up a family, and delivers contact-form messages to us. It gets the email address and the email's text.
- Sentry (error reports) gets details of a crash so we can fix it. Reports are scrubbed: no names, no kids, no family data.
- OpenStreetMap (place lookups), Google (a nearby place's name and your ZIP, to find its exact map link), the National Weather Service (the weather line), and Ticketmaster, the National Park Service and SeatGeek (family events, each when switched on) get your ZIP code (or the map area around it), and nothing else, when you open Play or Near you. Pictures of places and events load from the site that has them (such as Wikimedia Commons or the event's own site), which sees your internet address, as any website does. A map link opens Google Maps with that place or your ZIP, only if you tap it.
- Payments, if you make one, are handled by Apple, Google or Stripe. We never see your card.
Kid screens never show ads or anything to buy. There are no ads today. If ads are ever turned on, they will be non-personalized and on parent screens only, and families who joined during the friends and family preview will never see them (see the terms).
Cookies and internet addresses
We use no advertising or tracking cookies and no outside analytics tools: the visit and usage counts above are our own, kept in our own database. The cookies we set do one job each:
- Sign-in keeps you signed in until 30 days after you last use it.
- A sign-in step, for 10 minutes at most, while Continue with Google is between our site and Google's.
- Small reminders: that you closed the "What's new" note, or entered the preview password while the app is private.
- If you try an idea before signing up, your browser keeps the age you picked and the idea you played in a cookie for one day. It travels with your visits but is never stored, and nothing about your child is saved until you create an account and give consent.
Your internet address is used to limit repeated sign-in, sign-up and message attempts. We store it only scrambled, and delete it when the limit's window ends (an hour at most). Our host also sees it, as every website's host does.
How long we keep it
- Kids' data stays until you delete it, or until no one in your family has signed in for 24 months. Then it is deleted with the account.
- An account with no sign-in for 24 months is deleted.
- Usage counts and messages to us through the contact form: 13 months.
- Feedback and updates-list emails: a year at most.
- Demo families: a week.
Your choices
- See everything we hold about your family: download it from the Settings page.
- Delete a kid, or your whole family's data from the Settings page. It is gone at once.
- Withdraw consent with the link in either consent email. When you set up a family we email you what we keep about your kids and why, and again a day or two later to confirm. The link deletes your family's data; it works for 30 days, and the Settings page works any time.
- Stop tips and offers with the one-click link in each of those emails.
- Ask us anything through the contact form.
