Safety first
  • Small toy cars are a choking hazard for under 3s: use big cars only.

What you need

  • Painter's tape
  • Toy cars
  • Paper (optional)
  • Crayons or markers (optional)
  • Book or box, 1, for a tunnel

How to do it

Grown-up prep: Lay one long road of tape with a couple of curves. Leave the rest of the roll for the kids to extend.

  1. Pick your race car and give it a name.
Ask: What is your car called?
  2. Drive your cars along the starter road.
  3. Add more tape roads that lead to the couch, a door or a bedroom.
Ask: Where should the road go next?
  4. Make a tunnel from a book or a box.
  5. Draw a gas station or a house on paper and tape it beside the road.
  6. Line up for a race. Whose car gets to the finish line first?
  7. Now try a slow race. The slowest car to the finish wins!
Ask: Can you go super slow without stopping?
  8. Give a grown-up the grand tour of your town, then plan a new road for tomorrow!

Play it again

  • Delivery driver: carry a block on your car from one end of town to a house without leaving the road.
  • Traffic lights: a grown-up calls red, yellow and green, and every driver stops and goes.
  • Night drive: dim the lights and drive with a flashlight for headlights.
