What you need

  • Laundry basket
  • Rolled socks, a load of clean socks
  • Phone, 1, for the timer
  • Paper, 1 sheet
  • Pencil, 1

How to do it

Grown-up prep: Dump a load of clean socks on the floor. Say the time limit out loud: 3 minutes is a good start.

  1. Dump the clean socks into one big pile.
  2. Put your hands on your knees, and wait until a grown-up says go!
  3. Find two socks that match and roll them into a ball.
  4. Keep going until every sock has a partner.
Ask: Did any socks lose their partner?
  5. Hunt for missing partners in the basket and under the bed.
  6. Stop the timer and count your pairs.
Ask: How many pairs did you match?
  7. Carry each pair to the right drawer.
  8. Beat your time next laundry day.
Ask: Who can you race next laundry day?

Play it again

  • Partner relay: one player finds a sock, the next player finds its match.
  • Feel match: match socks by feel with your eyes closed.
  • Sort first: sort by color first, then match, and see if it's faster.
