Safety first
  • Grown-ups carry anything glass or sharp

What you need

  • Paper (optional)
  • Crayons or markers (optional)
  • Plate or tray, 1 per guest
  • Forks, 1 per guest
  • Napkins, 1 per guest
  • Towel, 1, for the waiter's arm (optional)

How to do it

Grown-up prep: Set out plates, forks and napkins within reach. Keep knives and glasses for yourself.

  1. Count the chairs. How many guests are coming tonight?
  2. Put a plate in front of every chair.
  3. Fold a napkin, put it on the left, and lay the fork on top.
  4. Add something pretty in the middle, like a flower, a toy or a candle drawing.
  5. Make a menu card for tonight's dinner.
  6. Practice your fanciest waiter voice.
Ask: How would a fancy waiter say hello?
  7. Greet everyone like a waiter when they sit down.
  8. Take everyone's dessert order, and pick a new restaurant theme for next time!
Ask: What will your next restaurant be called?

Play it again

  • Theme night: pick a theme like pirates or space and make the menu match.
  • Silent waiter: set the whole table without talking, using only signals.
  • Speed setter: time how fast you can set the table, then beat it tomorrow.
