Reviewed by our team.

Safety first
  • A grown-up does all the cutting
  • Quarter berries and cut veggies in thin strips for under 4s
  • Quarter grapes and cherry tomatoes lengthwise for under 4s.
  • Check for milk allergies if using yogurt dip.

What you need

  • Soft veggies (peppers, cucumber)
  • Berries (optional)
  • Bananas (optional)
  • Yogurt (optional)
  • Plate or tray
  • Knife, 1, for the grown-up
  • Bowl, 1 per color

How to do it

Grown-up prep: Wash and cut the fruit and veggies into small pieces and put each color in its own bowl.

  1. Wash your hands, rainbow chefs!
  2. Look at all the colors and name each one.
Ask: Which color do we have the most of?
  3. Pick a plate and decide which way the rainbow goes.
  4. Make one stripe of each color across the plate.
Ask: Can we make it look like a rainbow?
  5. Add a cloud at the end of your rainbow.
  6. Count the pieces in each stripe.
  7. Try one bite of a color you don't usually eat.
Ask: Is it crunchy, sweet or juicy?
  8. Share the plate and say which color tasted best.

Play it again

  • Color of the day: build a plate of just one color.
  • Taste and guess: close your eyes, taste a piece and guess its color.
  • Rainbow faces: use the colors to make a face instead of a rainbow.
