Safety first
- Kid scissors only, with a grown-up close by.
What you need
- Paper bag
- Crayons or markers
- Paper
- Glue stick
- Kid scissors
How to do it
Grown-up prep: Show how the bag's folded bottom flap becomes the mouth.
- Lay the bag flat with the folded flap facing up.
- Decide who your puppet is. Is it an animal, a monster or a person? Ask: Is your puppet friendly or grumpy?
- Draw a face on the flap, with the mouth on the fold.
- Cut ears, hair or a hat from paper and glue them on. Ask for help if you need it
- Color the rest of the bag for your puppet's clothes.
- Give your puppet a name and a funny voice. Ask: What's your puppet's favorite food?
- Now practice. Make your puppet say hello, then laugh, then fall asleep.
- Team up with someone and their puppet, and put on a little show.
- Make a friend for your puppet, or put on a show for the family! Ask: Who should your puppet meet next?
Play it again
- Puppet interview: a grown-up asks the puppet questions, and the puppet answers in its voice.
- Copy puppet: one puppet does a move or a sound and the other copies it.
- Puppet family: make one puppet for every person at home.
