Safety first
  • tripping or collisions while moving across the room
  • spoon handle could poke if players run or fall

What you need

  • Rolled socks, 1 small potato or balled-up socks
  • Phone, 1 (as a timer) (optional)
  • Spoon, 1 large

How to do it

Grown-up prep: Clear a walking path across the room and move toys, rugs that slip and furniture corners out of the way. Pick a start spot and a turnaround spot. Grab a large spoon and a small potato or a tight ball of rolled socks. Set a timer on your phone if you'd like to time rounds. The rule is walking only, no running, so nobody trips or gets poked by a spoon handle.

  1. Walk the path together, find the start and turnaround spots. Walking feet only!
  2. Pick your spoon and your wobbly treasure: a potato or a sock ball.
  3. Put the treasure in the spoon and hold the handle pointing away from your face.
  4. March in place with your spoon and keep the treasure still.
  5. Walk slowly to the turnaround spot and back with a flat spoon.
Ask: What happens to your treasure when you tip the spoon even a tiny bit?
  6. Pass the spoon and treasure to the next player without dropping it.
  7. Start the timer when each player begins and stop it when they finish. Ask for help if you need it
Ask: Do you think going slower or faster gets you the best time?
  8. Play more rounds and try to beat your own best time.
  9. Now invite a friend to join in! Who will be the steadiest carrier?
Ask: Who else could you challenge to a wobbly spoon race?

Play it again

  • Zigzag walk: set pillows or toys in a line and weave around them with your spoon.
  • Switch hands: carry the spoon with your other hand for an extra wobbly challenge.
  • Team relay: split into two teams and see which team gets everyone across with the fewest drops.
