Safety first
  • A sharp knife: a grown-up cuts the vegetables
  • Whole raisins and round slices are a choking size for under 3s: cut slices in half for the littlest guests
  • Dips can contain milk or egg: check the label for allergies

What you need

  • Carrots, 2
  • Celery stalks, 2
  • Soft veggies (peppers, cucumber), 1 cucumber
  • Soft veggies (peppers, cucumber), 1 red and 1 yellow bell pepper
  • Pear, 1 (optional)
  • Raisins, 2
  • Bowl of dip, 1
  • Plate or tray, 1 large plate
  • Small bowl, 1

How to do it

Grown-up prep: Wash the veggies, check the dip ingredients for allergies, and have a cutting board and sharp knife ready for the grown-up cutting step.

  1. A grown-up cuts the veggies into sticks and slices. A grown-up does this
  2. Sort all the veggie sticks into piles by color.
  3. Set the bowl of dip on one side of the plate.
  4. Fan your veggie feathers around the bowl, one color per row.
Ask: What color pattern do you want your turkey's tail to have?
  5. Place a pear or cucumber slice in front for the head.
  6. Press on two raisin eyes and a red pepper wattle.
  7. Count every feather on your turkey's tail.
Ask: Guess first: how many feathers do you think your turkey has?
  8. Invite everyone to pluck one feather, dip it and crunch!
  9. Now make a turkey for a friend! What veggie animal will you build next?
Ask: Which color feather was the crunchiest, and what animal should we make next time?

Play it again

  • Rainbow rule: every row must be a different color, and no two matching rows can touch.
  • Pattern puzzle: one person starts a color pattern and the next person has to keep it going.
  • Pluck and count: each guest says how many feathers are left after they pluck one.
