How to do it
Grown-up prep: Find a quiet spot, gather paper, a pen and an envelope, and look up the address or phone number of the person your child picks.
- Pick one person who made a real difference to you. Ask: Who taught you something you still use or think about today?
- Sit quietly for one minute and remember three moments with them.
- Jot down your three moments as quick notes.
- Write your letter: what they did, how it helped, what you can do now.
- Read your letter out loud to yourself. Ask: Which sentence do you think will make them smile the most?
- Add a drawing or a photo to make it extra special.
- Fold your letter and slip it into the envelope.
- Deliver it in person, mail it, or read it over a call. Ask for help if you need it
- Who else made a difference to you? Write another letter next! Ask: How do you think they felt when they got your letter?
Play it again
- Thank you chain: write a new letter each month to a different person who helped you.
- Mystery thanks: write a short anonymous note to a helper at school or in your neighborhood.
- Family round: everyone in the family writes a letter on the same night, then shares one favorite line.
