Safety first
  • The stove and pan are hot: a grown-up cooks and flips while kids stay a big step back
  • Raw batter and raw flour are not for eating
  • A sharp knife: a grown-up slices the fruit
  • Whole berries are a choking size for under 3s: cut them in half
  • Allergens: contains wheat, milk and egg

What you need

  • Flour, 1 cup
  • Sugar, 1 spoon
  • Baking powder, 2 teaspoons
  • Salt, 1 pinch
  • Milk, 1 cup
  • Eggs, 1
  • Melted butter, 2 spoons
  • Mixing bowl, 1
  • Whisk, 1
  • Frying pan, 1
  • Spatula, 1
  • Cooking oil, 1 teaspoon, for greasing the pan (optional)
  • Plate or tray, 1 per snowman
  • Bananas, 1
  • Berries, a small handful
  • Carrot strips, a few (optional)
  • Berries, a few strawberry slices (optional)
  • Jam, a spoonful (optional)

How to do it

Grown-up prep: Set out the ingredients and tools, melt and cool the butter, and slice the toppings so little hands can jump straight into mixing and decorating.

  1. Measure the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt into the bowl.
  2. Pour in the milk, crack in the egg and add the melted butter. Ask for help if you need it
  3. Stir gently until it is just mixed. Little lumps are okay!
  4. A grown-up heats the pan over medium heat. A grown-up does this
  5. A grown-up pours three touching circles: small, medium and big. A grown-up does this
Ask: What do you think the baking powder will do when the batter gets hot?
  6. Watch the bubbles pop, then a grown-up flips the snowman. A grown-up does this
Ask: The bubbles are popping! What do you think that tells us?
  7. A grown-up slides the snowman onto a plate to cool. A grown-up does this
  8. Press banana slices down the middle for buttons and berries for eyes.
  9. Add a carrot or strawberry nose and a jam scarf.
  10. Show off your snowman, then eat him up! Who gets the next one?
Ask: What silly face or outfit will your next snowman have?

Play it again

  • Snow family: make a big, medium and tiny snowman for everyone at the table.
  • Mystery face: each person decorates with their eyes closed, then everyone guesses the mood.
  • Topping swap: use only one fruit per snowman and see how creative the faces get.
