How to do it
Grown-up prep: Check the jar lid is clean and screws on tight. Keep the cream cold until you start.
- Pour the cold cream into the jar.
- Screw the lid on super tight.
- Shake the jar hard, and take turns! Ask: What do you think will happen to the cream if we keep shaking?
- Keep shaking, even when it turns into whipped cream.
- Shake until a yellow lump forms and thin liquid appears. Ask: Can you hear the lump bumping around in there?
- Pour the buttermilk into a bowl.
- Rinse the butter in cold water and squish it.
- Stir in a pinch of salt.
- Spread your butter on a cracker and share a taste! Ask: How is it different from the cream you started with?
Play it again
- Herb butter: stir in chopped chives or a pinch of garlic powder.
- Race the clock: guess how many minutes it will take, then time it.
- Music shake: shake in rhythm to a favorite song.
