What you need

  • Paper, 2 paper cubes
  • Paper, about 12 small cards (instead of cubes) (optional)
  • Crayons or markers, 1 drawing pen or marker
  • Cardboard box, 2 small boxes, to wrap in paper (optional)
  • Newspaper, 1 sheet
  • Kid scissors, 1 pair

How to do it

Grown-up prep: Make two blank paper cubes (fold them from paper using a cube template, or wrap two small boxes in paper). For a quicker version, cut paper into a stack of small cards instead. Have a marker ready.

  1. Gather your players and clear a flat spot on the table.
  2. On cube 1, draw a character on every side.
  3. On cube 2, draw a place on every side.
  4. On cube 3, draw a thing on every side.
  5. Roll all three cubes. The pictures on top are your story.
Ask: What could happen when these three meet?
  6. The youngest player starts the story with one sentence about the character.
  7. Take turns adding one sentence each, until the place and the thing are in the story.
  8. Give your story a big ending and a fun title.
  9. Roll again for a new tale, or invite a friend to play!
Ask: Which roll would make the silliest story?

Play it again

  • Five-picture tale: roll five pictures and fit them all into one story.
  • Letter chain: every sentence must start with a different letter.
  • Silly voices: each player tells their sentence in a funny voice.
