How to do it
Grown-up prep: Wash the spinach, cucumber, carrot, and everyone's hands. Cut cucumber into thin strips, and shred or finely chop the carrot. Check for allergies: dairy, wheat, and possibly sesame (in hummus).
- Wash your hands and lay a tortilla flat on the plate.
- Spread cream cheese or hummus all over the tortilla.
- Lay spinach leaves in a row across the tortilla.
- Add rows of carrot, cucumber, and cheese next to the spinach. Ask: Which color row do you want next? Can you make a rainbow?
- Roll the tortilla up tightly like a sleeping bag. Ask for help if you need it
- A grown-up slices the roll into pinwheels. A grown-up does thisAsk: What shape do you see inside each slice?
- Look at your pinwheels and taste one color at a time.
- Now share your pinwheels with a friend, or make more! What colors will you roll next? Ask: Who will you share your rainbow with?
Play it again
- Color challenge: roll up as many different colors as you can find in one pinwheel.
- Mystery filling: close your eyes and let a friend pick which veggie goes in first.
- Menu maker: name each pinwheel, like Sunny Spiral or Green Giant, and tell everyone what is inside.
