Paper Plate Carpet Skating
Here's one to try together!
Turn two paper plates into ice skates and glide across the rug like a champion!
Reviewed by our team.
Safety first
- slipping or falling if used on hard floors or stairs
- skate on carpet only
- tripping on clutter, so keep the space clear
What you need
- Paper, 2 paper plates per skater
- Phone, for playing music
- Pillows and cushions, 2
- Scrap paper, a few pieces, for score cards
- Crayons or markers, 1, for the score cards
How to do it
Grown-up prep: Pick a carpeted room and clear away toys, shoes and anything to trip on. Keep skating away from hard floors and stairs.
- Stand with one foot on each plate, smooth side down.
- Push and glide like an ice skater. Ask: How far do you think you can glide with one big push?
- Try a long glide on one foot.
- Try a slow spin.
- Try skating backwards.
- Skate a figure eight around the two cushions.
- Practice stopping. Ask: What helps your body stop: bent knees, flat feet or something else?
- Play music and pick three moves for a routine.
- Perform your routine and let the family judges give scores. Ask: Which move was your favorite to perform?
- Now invite someone to skate with you! What new move could you invent?
Play it again
- Partner skate: two skaters hold hands and glide together in time to the music.
- Freeze skate: skate until the music stops, then freeze in a pose.
- Obstacle rink: add more cushions and weave through them without touching.
