Safety first
- Scissors are sharp: help under 5s with the cutting
- Paper flames only, never a real candle
What you need
- Paper, 1
- Paper tubes or paper strips, 9
- Glue stick, 1
- Crayons or markers, 3 colors
- Paper, 1 sheet each
- Kid scissors, 1 pair
- Painter's tape, 1 roll
How to do it
Grown-up prep: Gather paper, tubes, glue, tape and crayons, and cut a long strip of card stock for the base.
- Roll nine paper strips into tubes and tape them closed.
- Make one candle taller, then glue all nine in a row on the card. Ask: Why do you think the middle candle stands taller than the rest?
- Color your candles blue, white and silver.
- Cut nine flame shapes from yellow and orange paper. Ask for help if you need it
- Night one: tape a flame on the middle candle and one more.
- Each new night, add one more flame, moving right to left. Ask: How many flames do you think will glow on the very last night?
- On night eight, count every flame together, helper candle too!
- Share what the lights mean to you, or make a menorah for a friend! Ask: What do these lights mean to your family, and who could you make one for?
Play it again
- Flame hunt: hide tonight's flame somewhere in the room and find it before taping it on.
- Count backwards: start with all flames on and take one off each night, counting down from eight.
- Story flames: tell one happy thing that happened today each time you add a flame.
