Safety first
  • hot oven and hot baking dish; a grown-up must handle with oven mitts
  • sharp knife for coring and slicing apples; grown-up does this
  • contains wheat and milk allergens
  • raw flour should not be tasted
  • let cool before eating

What you need

  • Flour, 1/2 cup
  • Apple, 4
  • Sugar, 1 spoon
  • Cinnamon, 1 pinch
  • Rolled oats, 1/2 cup
  • Brown sugar, 1/3 cup
  • Butter, 4 spoons, softened
  • Baking dish, 1
  • Bowl, 1 mixing bowl, plus serving bowls
  • Spoon, 1
  • Knife, 1, for the grown-up
  • Oven mitts, 1 pair

How to do it

Grown-up prep: Set out all the ingredients and let the butter soften on the counter. Plan on about an hour from start to finish, including baking and cooling.

  1. A grown-up preheats the oven to 350°F. A grown-up does this
  2. A grown-up cores and slices the four apples. A grown-up does this
  3. Tuck the apple slices into the dish.
  4. Toss the slices with the sugar and cinnamon using a spoon.
  5. Rub the flour, oats, brown sugar and butter together with your fingertips.
Ask: What do you think will happen to the butter as you rub it in?
  6. Scatter the crumbs over the apples.
  7. Bake at 350°F for 35 minutes, until the top is golden and the apples bubble. A grown-up does this
Ask: What do you think the top and the apples will look like when it comes out?
  8. A grown-up takes the hot dish out with oven mitts. A grown-up does this
  9. Let it cool for 15 minutes, then dig in and share it!
Ask: What would you change or add to make your next crisp even better?

Play it again

  • Fruit swap: try pears, peaches or berries instead of apples.
  • Secret spice: add a new spice like nutmeg or ginger and guess the flavor.
  • Mini crisps: bake single servings in a muffin tin and decorate them with your own crumb patterns.
