What you need

  • Rolled socks, 1 pair, rolled into a ball

How to do it

Grown-up prep: No supplies needed. Pick a cozy spot to sit face to face, in the car, or at the table. Have a few starter categories in mind in case your kids need a nudge.

  1. Sit in a circle with a pair of rolled-up socks.
  2. Pick a category together, like animals.
  3. Toss the socks to someone. The catcher names one thing in the category.
Ask: What is one thing that fits our category?
  4. The catcher tosses the socks on, and the next catcher names a new thing.
  5. Count each new answer out loud as a team.
  6. Stuck or repeating? The catcher picks a brand new category.
  7. Play a few rounds and remember your best number.
Ask: Which category was the easiest, and which was the hardest?
  8. Now invite someone new to play! Can you beat your best number?

Play it again

  • Speed round: take your turn as fast as you can, with no thinking pauses.
  • Memory chain: repeat the whole list before adding your new item.
  • Letter hunt: every item must start with the same letter, like B.
