Safety first
  • A metal tape measure snaps back fast: keep fingers clear

What you need

  • Paper, 3 or 4 sheets per person
  • Pencil, 1 per person
  • Crayons or markers, 1 set
  • Tape measure, 1
  • Cardboard box, 1 large envelope or small box per person
  • Small keepsake from this year, like a ticket or photo, 1 (optional)

How to do it

Grown-up prep: Gather paper, pencils, crayons, a tape measure and an envelope or small box for each person, then pick a door frame to measure against.

  1. Stand tall against the door frame so we can mark your height. Ask for help if you need it
  2. Fill in your All About Me page.
  3. Write one goal for next year and one guess about future you.
Ask: What do you think will be different about you a year from now?
  4. Draw a picture of you or your favorite thing this year.
  5. Trace your hand on another sheet of paper.
  6. Pick a small treasure from this year to add.
Ask: Why did you choose that treasure?
  7. Fold your pages and seal everything in the envelope or box.
  8. Write "Open next New Year" and today's date on the front.
  9. Hide your time capsule in a safe secret spot.
  10. Next New Year, open it and read your guesses aloud! Who else wants one?
Ask: Which of your predictions do you think will come true?

Play it again

  • Family capsule: everyone makes one and guesses each other's predictions before sealing.
  • Swap guesses: write a prediction about someone else and see who knew them best.
  • Half-year peek: make a mini capsule to open in summer and compare.
