Safety first
  • hot stove and hot pan can cause burns, so an adult must stay right beside the child
  • raw egg can carry bacteria, so hands must be washed after cracking eggs
  • egg is a common allergen
  • hot oil may splatter

What you need

  • Eggs, 2 to 3 per person
  • Cooking oil, 1 tablespoon
  • Soft veggies (peppers, cucumber), 1/4 cup chopped per person (spinach, peppers, or tomato)
  • Frozen peas, 2 tablespoons (optional)
  • Salt, 1 pinch
  • Bowl, 1 mixing bowl, plus 1 small bowl
  • Whisk, 1, or a fork
  • Pan, 1 nonstick pan
  • Spatula, 1
  • Plate or tray, 1
  • Pot holder, 1
  • Spoon, 1
  • Knife, 1, for the grown-up

How to do it

Grown-up prep: You'll need to stay right beside your child at the stove the whole time. Wash and chop the veggies into small pieces ahead of time (the knife part is for grown-ups). Check for egg allergies before starting.

  1. Choose one veggie you've never tried in eggs before.
Ask: Which veggie are you curious about, and what do you think it will taste like with egg?
  2. Crack the eggs into the bowl.
  3. Wash your hands with soap and water.
  4. Whisk the eggs until they're all one color.
  5. Add your veggie to the eggs and stir.
Ask: Do you think the veggie will change how the eggs look or taste?
  6. A grown-up heats the pan over low heat with 1 tablespoon of oil. A grown-up does this
  7. Pour in the eggs and stir slowly, with a grown-up right beside you. Ask for help if you need it
Ask: Can you see the runny egg turning solid? Where does it start?
  8. Turn off the stove and slide the eggs onto a plate. A grown-up does this
  9. Taste your scramble and give it a score out of ten.
  10. Share a bite with someone, then pick your next mystery veggie!
Ask: Will your helper give the same score as you, or a different one?

Play it again

  • Veggie duel: make two small scrambles with different veggies and see which scores higher.
  • Guess the veggie: close your eyes while a friend feeds you a bite, then guess what is inside.
  • Critic review: describe your scramble in three words, like a real food critic, before you give the score.
