Safety first
  • hot oven or toaster oven: adult handles toasting and removal
  • hot melted cheese and toast: cool before eating
  • allergen: contains wheat
  • allergen: contains milk
  • choking risk from whole olives and peas for young children; for children under 4, cut olives and peas into small pieces and cut the toast into strips

What you need

  • Bread or English muffins, 4 slices or muffin halves
  • Tomato sauce, 4 tablespoons
  • Shredded cheese, about 20 thin mozzarella strips
  • Frozen peas, 8 peas (or 4 olive slices)
  • Plate or tray, 1 baking tray
  • Bowl, 1 small
  • Spoon, 1
  • Oven mitts, 1 pair
  • Knife, 1, for the grown-up
  • Cutting board, 1
  • Olives, 4, instead of the peas (optional)

How to do it

Grown-up prep: A grown-up preheats the oven or toaster oven to 400°F in the first step. Cut cheese into thin strips and slice olives. The grown-up does all the toasting and takes the tray out.

  1. A grown-up preheats the oven to 400°F. A grown-up does this
  2. Wash your hands and line up your bread on the tray.
  3. Scoop a spoonful of tomato sauce onto your bread.
  4. Spread the sauce all the way out with the back of the spoon.
  5. Lay a mozzarella strip across your mummy like a bandage.
Ask: Which way will your first bandage go?
  6. Add more strips in a crisscross until the mummy is mostly white.
  7. Leave a little gap near the top for the eyes.
  8. Press two olive slices or two peas into the gap.
  9. Bake at 400°F for 5 to 8 minutes, until the cheese melts. A grown-up does this
  10. Wait for your mummies to cool, then taste them. Show a friend or make more!
Ask: What spooky face will your next mummy have?

Play it again

  • Monster toast: swap the bandages for cheese hair and make a silly monster face.
  • Mummy match: make two toasts, then try to copy each other's design.
  • Spooky snack plate: make a whole mummy family and name each one.
