What you need

  • Phone, 1 phone or music player with spooky-silly songs

How to do it

Grown-up prep: Clear an open space and move furniture, toys and anything trippy out of the way. Queue up some spooky-silly music on a phone or speaker you can pause easily.

  1. Check the dance floor together for anything to bump into or trip over.
  2. The first monster is a zombie! Show everyone a slow, stiff-armed walk.
  3. Start the music and dance like a zombie all around the room.
  4. Pause the music without warning. Everyone freezes like a statue!
Ask: Can you stay totally still, even your nose?
  5. Call out a new monster, like a flapping bat, and start the music again.
  6. Keep playing rounds with new monsters: mummy, werewolf, ghost and swamp monster.
Ask: What new monster should we invent for the next round?
  7. Finish with a slow, sleepy monster dance to calm your bodies down.
  8. Now invite friends to join, or invent your own monster! What will it be?
Ask: What would your very own monster dance look like?

Play it again

  • Statue shapes: freeze in the shape of the monster you were dancing.
  • DJ monster: take turns being the DJ who picks monsters and controls the music.
  • One foot freeze: when the music stops, freeze while standing on one foot.
