Safety first
- Scissors are sharp: help under 5s with the cutting
- String is a strangling risk: hang the mittens out of reach of babies and toddlers
What you need
- Paper, 8 sheets, enough for 16 mittens
- Kid scissors, 1 pair of kid scissors
- Crayons or markers, a handful of colors
- Long piece of string, 1 (optional)
- Clothespins, about 8 (optional)
How to do it
Grown-up prep: Gather paper, kid scissors and crayons, and clear a table or floor space big enough for 4 rows of mittens.
- Fold a sheet of paper in half and press the crease flat.
- Draw a big mitten on top and cut through both layers. Ask for help if you need itAsk: When you pull the layers apart, will the two mittens look exactly the same?
- Keep folding and cutting until you have 8 pairs. Ask for help if you need it
- Decorate each pair with the same design, a new one for every pair.
- Shuffle the mittens and lay them face down in rows.
- Take turns flipping over two mittens. Ask: Before you flip, where do you think that striped mitten was hiding?
- Found a match? Keep the pair and take another turn!
- Count your pairs. Whoever has the most wins!
- Hang your pairs on a string, or shuffle and play again! Ask for help if you need itAsk: Which design was the trickiest to remember, and what will you draw next time?
Play it again
- Speed round: set a timer and see how fast the whole family can match every pair.
- Odd mitten out: hide one extra mitten with no twin and see who ends up with it.
- Grown-up challenge: grown-ups must flip with their eyes closed for a second before looking.
