How to do it
Grown-up prep: A grown-up peels the melon and cuts it into flat slabs. Wash all the fruit first. Check for fruit allergies. Keep sharp knives out of reach and give kids only a butter knife or nylon knife.
- Slide the damp cloth under your cutting board.
- Make a claw with your helping hand. Ask: Why do you think we tuck our fingertips under?
- Try the bridge grip on a peeled banana.
- Chop the strawberries into small pieces.
- Cut the pear into bite-size chunks.
- Chop the melon slabs into cubes. Ask: Which fruit was the easiest to cut, and which was the trickiest?
- Tip all the fruit into the bowl and gently mix.
- Squeeze the orange over the fruit.
- Serve your salad, then make another batch! What fruit mix will you invent next? Ask: What fruit would you add next time?
Play it again
- Rainbow salad: pick one fruit for each color of the rainbow.
- Same-size challenge: try to cut every piece the same size.
- Skewer party: thread the pieces onto blunt sticks in a pattern.
