Safety first
  • fall risk if children climb or jump on the bed while racing
  • small items like socks are not a choking hazard but supervise toddlers with any small clothing accessories (buttons, pins)

What you need

  • Laundry basket, 1 basket of clean laundry
  • Phone, 1 timer (optional)

How to do it

Grown-up prep: Grab a basket of clean laundry and clear a bed or other flat surface. Have a phone or timer ready if you want to time the race. Pull out any clothes with pins or loose buttons if little ones are playing. Set the rule before you start: feet stay on the floor, and nobody climbs or jumps on the bed.

  1. Tip the clean laundry onto the bed in one big heap. Ask for help if you need it
Ask: How long do you think it will take to sort this whole mountain?
  2. Say the rule: feet stay on the floor, no climbing or jumping on the bed.
  3. Start the timer and shout "Ready, set, sort!"
  4. Race to make piles by color: darks, lights, and brights.
Ask: Which pile is getting the biggest? Is that shirt more blue or more purple?
  5. Hunt for socks and match them into pairs.
  6. Pick one item and fold it as neatly as you can.
Ask: What's the trickiest part of folding: the sleeves or the corners?
  7. Stop the timer and say your time out loud.
  8. Now race again, or invite a friend! Can you beat your record?
Ask: What's one trick that could make you even faster next time?

Play it again

  • Team race: split into two teams and see which team finishes its piles first.
  • Sock detective: only match socks and see how many pairs you can find in one minute.
  • Secret color: a grown-up picks a color and everyone hunts for only that color first.
