Safety first
- hazards depend on the chosen skill and materials (e.g. knots with rope, sharp items); none stated in the source
What you need
- Paper, 1 index card or half sheet
- Crayons or markers, 1 pencil
- Lesson items, 2 sets, like paper or a deck of cards
- Stickers, 1 gold star (optional)
How to do it
Grown-up prep: Let your child pick the skill themselves. Choose something safe, such as a card trick, a paper airplane, a knot with soft rope or a drawing. Skip anything with sharp tools or heat.
- Choose one skill you know really well. Ask: What are you best at that you could teach in ten minutes?
- Plan your lesson: what you show first, what they try, how you check.
- Write your three steps on the card.
- Gather what you need and set up two spots.
- Teach your student! Show each step slowly. Ask: Does that make sense so far? Want me to show it again?
- Now let your student try it all by themselves.
- Give a gold star or one helpful tip.
- Swap roles! Let the grown-up teach you something. Ask: What did you learn about teaching that you can use as a student?
- Now teach someone else, or plan another lesson! What will you teach next? Ask: Who else would love a lesson from you, and what will it be?
Play it again
- Speed lesson: teach a tiny skill in two minutes flat.
- Silent teacher: show the skill with no words, only gestures.
- Class of three: teach two students at once and see who finishes first.
