Safety first
  • Honey should never be given to babies under 1 year old
  • Oats may be cross-contaminated with wheat, so check for gluten or wheat allergy
  • Seed allergies possible with sunflower seed butter and seed mix-ins
  • Chocolate chips, raisins, and seeds can be choking hazards for very young children
  • Check mix-in labels for other allergens such as tree nuts or coconut
  • Blind taste testing involves eating unseen foods, so confirm allergens first

What you need

  • Plate or tray, 1
  • Paper, 1 small card per person
  • Crayons or markers, 1 pen or marker per person
  • Rolled oats, 1 cup
  • Sunflower seed butter, 1/2 cup
  • Honey, 2 tablespoons
  • Mix-ins, 4 or 5 kinds, like raisins or chocolate chips
  • Bowl, 1, plus small bowls for mix-ins
  • Spoon, 1
  • Measuring cups, 1 set

How to do it

Grown-up prep: Check allergies first: sunflower seeds, oats (may contain wheat), and any mix-ins. Honey is not for babies under 1. Chop or skip small mix-ins like raisins and chocolate chips for very young kids.

  1. Measure the oats, seed butter and honey into the bowl.
  2. Pick two mix-ins to make your very own flavor.
Ask: Which two mix-ins do you think will taste best together?
  3. Stir everything together until it looks sticky and clumpy.
  4. Put the bowl in the fridge and wait 10 minutes.
  5. Scoop and roll the mixture into balls about the size of a ping-pong ball.
Ask: Does the mix feel stickier or firmer after chilling?
  6. Line up your bites on the plate.
  7. Invent a silly flavor name and write it on your card.
  8. Close your eyes, taste, and vote for your favorite bite!
Ask: Which bite wins, and what flavor would you invent next?

Play it again

  • Mix-in mystery: make three batches and guess what is hiding inside each one.
  • Flavor shop: draw a menu with prices and let family members order their favorites.
  • Color theme: make a batch using only mix-ins of one color, like all dark or all golden.
