Safety first
  • Throwing at faces can hurt eyes: throw over the wall, never at faces
  • Running near cushions can mean a fall: walk near the walls

What you need

  • Paper, about 20 sheets of scrap paper
  • Rolled socks, about 20 pairs, instead of paper (optional)
  • Pillows and cushions, enough for two low walls
  • Phone, 1, to play music
  • Laundry basket, 1 (optional)

How to do it

Grown-up prep: Clear a play space, gather scrap paper or clean socks and some cushions, and cue up a few upbeat songs.

  1. Crumple paper or roll socks into about 20 soft snowballs.
  2. Stack cushions into two low snow walls at opposite ends.
  3. Make two teams and split the snowballs evenly.
  4. Learn the big rule: throw over the wall, never at faces.
  5. Start the music and throw snowballs over the other wall!
  6. Freeze when the music stops!
Ask: Which side do you think has fewer snowballs right now?
  7. Count the snowballs on each side; fewer snowballs wins!
  8. Add a silly new rule, play three rounds, then trade sides.
  9. Now invite someone new to join your snow fort, or invent a rule!
Ask: What is the silliest snowball rule we could try next time?

Play it again

  • Blizzard round: the grown-up dumps all the snowballs in at once and both teams race to clear their side.
  • Snowman freeze: when the music stops, everyone holds a snowman pose and the wobbliest player gives away one snowball.
  • Basket blast: each team takes turns tossing into a laundry basket, and the team with the most inside wins.
