Safety first
  • wild berries and mushrooms can be poisonous: leave them where they are, and never eat anything found outside
  • only gather items already on the ground, do not pull leaves from plants
  • handle sticks carefully to avoid poking

What you need

  • Paper bag, 1 for collecting
  • Phone, 1 for a photo (optional)

How to do it

Grown-up prep: Pick a flat, open spot outside with fallen leaves nearby, like a yard, park or path edge.

  1. Grab your basket and head outside to hunt for turkey parts.
  2. Collect leaves, two sticks, a pinecone or stone, and one bright red leaf.
  3. Sort your leaves by color: red, orange, yellow and brown.
  4. Place the pinecone or stone on the ground for the turkey's body.
  5. Fan the leaves out behind the body as tail feathers.
  6. Set two sticks below the body for legs.
  7. Add the bright red leaf as the wattle.
  8. Take a photo and admire your turkey. Come back tomorrow to see what the wind did!
  9. Make more turkeys! What will your next one look like?

Play it again

  • Color hunt: find one leaf of every color before you start.
  • Wind test: build in a breezy spot and a sheltered spot, then compare tomorrow.
  • Other animals: use leaves and sticks to build a butterfly, a fish or a peacock.
