Safety first
  • honey must not be given to babies under 1 year (botulism risk)
  • dairy allergen in yogurt
  • possible berry allergies
  • whole berries can be a choking risk for young children
  • frozen pieces are very cold and hard on teeth

What you need

  • Plate or tray, 1 lined baking tray
  • Yogurt, about 2 cups plain yogurt
  • Berries, 1 cup, washed (cut small for little ones)
  • Parchment paper, 1 sheet
  • Bowl, 1
  • Spoon, 1 big spoon
  • Towel, 1 damp
  • Honey, about 1 tablespoon (optional)
  • Knife, 1, for a grown-up to cut berries (optional)
  • Container with a lid, 1, for leftovers

How to do it

Grown-up prep: Line a baking tray with baking paper and clear a flat spot in the freezer. Wash the berries. For younger kids, cut berries into small pieces (quarter blueberries and grapes-sized fruit lengthwise) to reduce choking risk. Skip honey for anyone under 1 year old. Check for dairy or berry allergies first.

  1. Wash your hands and set out the tray, yogurt, and berries.
  2. Line the tray with paper so the bark won't stick. Ask for help if you need it
  3. Scoop the yogurt onto the tray and spread it flat, as thick as your finger.
  4. Scatter the berries all over the top and press them in gently.
Ask: Can you make a pattern or a face with your berries?
  5. If you like, drizzle a little honey over the top in zigzags. Ask for help if you need it
  6. Carry the tray carefully to the freezer and leave it for about two hours. Ask for help if you need it
Ask: What do you think the yogurt will feel like when we take it out?
  7. Take the tray out and snap the bark into pieces with your hands.
  8. Wait a minute, then take small bites. Pop leftovers back in the freezer. Ask for help if you need it
  9. Now share your bark with friends, or make more! What berry mix will you try next?
Ask: Who would you love to share a piece with?

Play it again

  • Rainbow bark: use berries in different colors and make stripes across the yogurt.
  • Melt race: guess which piece melts first, one on a plate or one in a cup, then test it.
  • Face bark: make a silly face with the berries, then snap it and see who gets the nose.
