- Crayons or markers, colored pencils
- Pencil, 1 sharpened
- Ruler, 1
- Eraser, 1
How to do it
Grown-up prep: Set out paper, a sharp pencil, a ruler, an eraser and colored pencils at a table with good light.
- Draw a straight line across the middle of your paper.
- Make one dot in the middle of your line. Ask: This dot is called the vanishing point. What do you think might happen to things that get close to it?
- Draw two lines from the bottom corners up to the dot.
- Draw a tall rectangle beside the road for a building.
- Join each rectangle's corners to the dot with your ruler. Ask: Look at the sides of the buildings. Do they look like they are zooming away from you?
- Add windows, doors and a tree along the street.
- Draw a big car near you and a tiny car far away.
- Color your street with colored pencils.
- Show someone your street, then draw another one! What will you add next time? Ask: What could you put in your next street, and where would your vanishing point go?
Play it again
- Move the dot: put the vanishing point high or low and see how the street changes.
- City skyline: fill the street with tall buildings and a crowd of tiny cars.
- Mystery street: draw the street, then add a surprise far away near the dot for a friend to find.
