How to do it
Grown-up prep: Set out the bread dough, butter and a muffin tin, and clear a spot near the oven where little bakers can work safely.
- A grown-up preheats the oven to 375°F. A grown-up does this
- Rub butter inside each muffin cup with a paper towel.
- Tear off small bits of dough.
- Roll each bit between your hands into a big marble ball.
- Put three touching balls in each muffin cup. Ask: What do you think will happen to the three balls in the hot oven?
- A grown-up melts the butter and lets it cool a little. A grown-up does this
- Brush the tops of the dough with melted butter.
- Bake at 375°F for 12 to 15 minutes, until golden brown. A grown-up does thisAsk: Look! What happened to the three separate balls?
- Count the rolls and check there is one for each person.
- Share your clover rolls at dinner, or make more! What shape will you try next? Ask: Which part of making the rolls was your favorite, and who would you bake for next time?
Play it again
- Lucky four: put four balls in each cup and see if you get a four-leaf clover roll.
- Topping test: sprinkle a pinch of salt or herbs on half the rolls and compare.
- Guess and count: guess how many balls the whole tray needs, then count to check.
