Safety first
- Sprinkles are a choking size for under 3s: offer big ones and sit close
- Allergens: the cookies contain wheat, milk and egg, and the icing contains milk
What you need
- Plain sugar cookies, about 12
- Powdered sugar, 1 cup
- Milk, 2 spoons
- Food coloring, red and green
- Clear cups, 3 small bowls
- Butter knives or spoons
- Sprinkles
- Plate or tray, 1 tray
- Plate or tray, 1 serving plate (optional)
- Wrapping for gifting cookies (optional)
How to do it
Grown-up prep: Cover the table, set out plain cookies, measure the icing ingredients and line up the bowls, spreaders and sprinkles.
- Stir the powdered sugar and milk together until it's smooth. Ask: What do you think will happen to the white powder when the milk goes in?
- Spoon the icing into three small bowls.
- Make one bowl red, one bowl green, and keep one white.
- Spread a thin coat of icing on each cookie.
- Decorate with sprinkles, dots and lines. Ask: Which holiday shape will you make: a tree, a star, a stocking or a snowman?
- Twist time: draw red and white stripes like a candy cane.
- Set the cookies on the tray and let the icing harden.
- Put your favorites on a plate, or wrap some for a neighbor! Ask: Who will you surprise with a cookie, and what new design will you try next time?
Play it again
- Theme round: everyone decorates a cookie to match a holiday song.
- Copycat cookies: one person decorates, the others try to make a perfect twin.
- Mystery shape: decorate a design and let others guess what it is.
