  • Plate or tray, 1 baking tray
  • Canned black beans, 1/2 can (optional)
  • Soft veggies (peppers, cucumber), 1/4 cup, chopped by a grown-up (optional)

  • Box grater, 1
  • Sieve, 1
  • Bowl, 3 small, for fillings

  • Sweetcorn, about 1/4 cup (optional)
  • Cutting board, 1, for the grown-up

How to do it

Grown-up prep: Chop any peppers into small pieces and have the fillings ready in bowls. Remember the oven is hot, so this one is a team job with you.

  1. A grown-up preheats the oven to 400°F. A grown-up does this
  2. Lay the two tortillas flat on the cold tray.
  3. Grate cheese onto one half of each tortilla.
  4. Rinse the black beans in the sieve.
  5. Add your favorite fillings on top of the cheese.
Ask: Which fillings do you think will taste best when they get hot and melty together?
  6. Fold each tortilla in half and press it down.
  7. Bake at 400°F for 8 to 10 minutes, until the cheese melts and the edges turn golden. A grown-up does this
Ask: What do you think will happen to the cheese inside while it bakes?
  8. Let it cool, then a grown-up cuts it into wedges. A grown-up does this
  9. Dip your wedges in salsa or yogurt, then make more folds!
Ask: What filling mix would you invent for your next tortilla fold?

Play it again

  • Pizza fold: swap the beans for tomato sauce and veggies.
  • Taste test: make two folds with different fillings and vote on a winner.
  • Mystery fold: one person fills it secretly and everyone guesses what's inside.
