  • A full water bottle or a book could be dropped on a foot

What you need

  • Paper, 1 sheet or more
  • Apple, 1
  • Book, 1
  • Spoon, 1
  • Water bottle, 1 full
  • Shoe, 1
  • Rice, 1
  • Kitchen or bathroom scale, 1
  • Pencil, 1

How to do it

Grown-up prep: Gather six safe household objects of different weights and sizes, and set up a scale on a flat floor or table.

  1. Line up all six objects where everyone can see them.
  2. Sit down and close your eyes. A partner puts one object in each hand.
  3. Say which one feels heavier.
Ask: Which one do you think is heavier, and how can you tell?
  4. Try more pairs until you have felt all six objects.
  5. Eyes still closed, put all six in order from lightest to heaviest.
  6. Guess how much each object weighs and write it down.
Ask: Which object do you think will surprise us most on the scale?
  7. Weigh each object on the scale and write the real number.
  8. Compare the real order with your guessed order. Closest guess wins a point!
  9. Now swap places and test your family! Which six objects will fool them most?
Ask: What would you change next time to trick our hands even more?

Play it again

  • Trick round: pick objects that are big but light, and small but heavy, to fool your partner.
  • Team guess: work together on one set of guesses and see if you can beat your own best score.
  • Speed round: sort all six by feel in just one minute with eyes closed.
