Safety first
- Choking risk under 4: mini marshmallows and apple wedges
- Adult must core and slice the apple (knife use)
- Cream cheese contains milk (dairy allergen)
- Sunflower seed butter is a seed allergen to check for, though it is peanut free
What you need
- Berries, 1 strawberry slice per mouth
- Plate or tray, 1
- Apple, 1 red apple
- Seed butter or cream cheese, a few spoonfuls
- Mini marshmallows, 4 to 6 per mouth
- Spoon, 1
- Knife, 1, grown-up only
How to do it
Grown-up prep: Wash the apple, then core it and cut it into thin wedges with a knife. Check allergies before you start. Mini marshmallows and apple wedges can choke children under 4, so this is best for ages 4 and up.
- Look at your apple wedges. Pick two that match. Ask: Which two wedges would make the best monster lips?
- Spoon some spread onto the flat side of one wedge.
- Spread the other wedge in the same way.
- Line up marshmallows along one wedge for teeth.
- Tuck a strawberry slice in the middle for a tongue. Ask: Is your monster sticking its tongue out or hiding it?
- Press the second wedge on top to close the mouth.
- Give your monster a silly name and make a voice for it.
- Make more mouths and line them up! How many monsters will you have? Ask: Can you build one with a different face, like a grumpy one or a happy one?
Play it again
- Monster party: make a whole family of mouths and give each its own name and voice.
- Dentist check: count the teeth in each mouth and see who has the most.
- Mystery mouth: close your eyes while a friend adds a surprise tongue, then guess what it is.
