Rainbow Nature Hunt
Here's one to try together!
Find something outside for every color of the rainbow.
Reviewed by our team.
Safety first
- Look, don't pick, for anything you can't identify
- Nothing from outside goes in mouths.
- A grown-up stays close near roads.
What you need
- Paper bag
- Paper (optional)
- Crayons or markers (optional)
How to do it
Grown-up prep: Draw six colored circles on the bag or a sheet of paper, plus one for a favorite.
- Look at the circles on your bag and name every color.
- Here is the explorer rule: only pick up things already on the ground.
- Go outside and look for something red.
- Keep going through orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. Ask: Which color is hardest to find? Why?
- Find something in your favorite color for the last circle.
- Now find something with two colors at once. Ask: Can you find a leaf that is green and red?
- Lay your finds out in rainbow order, then count them.
- Show your rainbow to someone, then put the finds back outside! Ask: Which color will you hunt for first next time?
Play it again
- Shape hunt: find something round, something pointy and something flat.
- Touch hunt: find something smooth, something bumpy, something soft and something rough.
- One color day: everyone finds as many things as they can in a single color.
